Chinese boat, captain seized for allegedly operating in Japan waters

Crime Blotter19 February, 2009 20:46

FUKUOKA - The Fisheries Agency seized a Chinese fishing boat and arrested its skipper Thursday for allegedly operating in Japan's 200-nautical mile (370 kilometer) exclusive economic zone off Nagasaki Prefecture, the agency said.

The 197-ton Chinese dragnet fishing vessel was identified as the Zhelingyu 23327 manned by a crew of nine. Its captain Zhuang Zhongjun, 35, was arrested on suspicion of operating without obtaining permission from the Japanese government.

Investigations showed that Zhuang conducted unauthorized fishing operations in the East China Sea about 96 km west-northwest of Fukue Island in the Goto island chain off Kyushu at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.

A Japanese fisheries patrol boat spotted the Chinese boat operating in the Japanese economic zone where it caught about 300 kilograms of fish, including cuttlefish and bream, they said.  (read more)

4 Vietnamese shrimp exporters exempted from US Anti-Dumping Tax  09/15/2008 20:45:02

Four Vietnamese businesses are now exempted from anti-dumping taxes on their shrimp exports to the US market.

According to a decision announced by the US Department of Commerce (DoC) on September 9, the businesses are the Minh Phat Seafood Co. Ltd., the Ca Mau Frozen Seafood Processing Import-Export Corp, the Grobest&I-mei Industry Vietnam and the Viet Hai Seafoods Co. Ltd. This was the result of the DoC's second administrative review of the anti-dumping taxes on Vietnam's frozen warm-water shrimp during the period between February 1, 2006 and January 31, 2007. Under the decision, 23 Vietnamese shrimp exporters are subject to a 4.57 per cent tax rate and one business enjoys the rate of 4.3 per cent, while all the remaining one have to pay a 25.76 per cent tax. The fisheries industry sets a target of earning US$850 million from exports of aquatic products to the US this year. Last year Vietnam's products made up 6.2 per cent of the US's total seafood imports at US$12 billion.

TOURISTS are known for acting silly, but the ban on visitors in the Japanese tuna market seems justified after one man licked a fish's head.

The Death Of Sushi? (Yakuza and the Russian Mafia)

Japan's passion for sushi is fuelling a huge trade in illegally caught seafood that's endangering fish stocks and enriching organized crime

By Velisarios Kattoulas/WAKKANAI and SAPPORO, HOKKAIDO, and VLADIVOSTOK, RUSSIAN FAR EAST

IN THE EARLY HOURS of May 21 this year, a flaming torch and three plastic canisters filled with petrol crashed through the window of an apartment on the Russian island of Sakhalin, north of Japan. Inside, Vitaly Gamov, his wife, Larissa, and their 14-year-old son, Ivan, woke to the sound of the breaking glass.

As Vitaly Gamov struggled to put out the flames, his son opened a door to escape. A gust of air swept into the room, causing the burning petrol to explode. Ivan managed to escape with only minor burns, but his parents were less fortunate. From Sakhalin, Ivan's 38-year-old mother was eventually flown to a hospital in Tokyo. There, she underwent months of treatment for burns covering her entire.. (more)

Police: Shoplifter Stuffs Seafood In His Pants

POSTED: 12:40 pm MST August 15, 2008

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A man was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting on Thursday after Chandler police said he attempted to steal packages of octopus and shrimp by stuffing them down his pants.

Ricardo Arcos-Lopez grabbed the packages, slipped them in his shorts and was able to breach cashiers before the store manager caught him at the door, officers said.

When police arrived, they said the name Arcos-Lopez gave them was bogus. When he revealed his real name, police said they discovered he was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant and two felony warrants.

Officers said the man had a history of using false identities. Police said they found a fake mustache and beard at the time of his arrest. Resource: http://www.kpho.com/news/17202500/detail.html?rss=pho&psp=news

David's thought:  I wonder if they threw the octopus and shrimp away in the trash can.

DO NOT BUY TUNA WITH THIS IATTC LABEL!

Earth Island Institute wishes to warn consumers about the label sponsored by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) that falsely purports to protect dolphins. The IATTC has opposed the Dolphin Safe tuna policy of Earth Island Institute.

The IATTC supports and promotes chasing and netting dolphins, in order to catch the tuna which swim beneath. More than 7 million dolphins have died due to tuna fishing using this method. The IATTC has released an official "dolphin safe" mark for tuna labels which threatens the current Dolphin Safe standards for tuna and promises to mislead consumers. This logo (see illustration) does not result in protection of dolphins. The initials AIDCP stand for the Agreement on the International Dolphin Conservation Program, an international agreement that purports to save dolphins but actually allows thousands to be killed annually. The IATTC is made up of representatives of tuna fishing nations that support harassment and killing of dolphins. In order to avoid consumer confusion, Earth Island urges consumers to avoid buying any tuna that carries this logo.

To date, only one company has been found using this label: Grupo Calvo of Spain, sold in Europe and Latin America. For further information, see our Consumer Alert on Calvo Tuna.

However, we are also concerned that this phony Dolphin Safe logo may turn up on other brands of tuna.

Consumers can ensure the protection of dolphins by looking for tuna sold by the companies that have pledged to buy only truly “dolphin safe” tuna, i.e. tuna caught without chasing and netting of dolphins. These companies subscribe to independent monitoring of their activities to ensure that their tuna is caught without any harm or harassment to dolphins.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

(1) Do NOT Buy Tuna with the IATTC Label:

If you see IATTC logo on canned tuna for sale, do not buy it!

(2) Talk to the Store Owner or Manager:

You can tell them that the IATTC label is misleading and can lead to tuna caught by methods that harm and kill thousands of dolphins annually. They should take it off their shelves and not sell it.

Please Contact www.DolphinSafe.org for further information or issues.
